Damion Taylor Bondage Pornography Slavery

“You may choose to look the other way but you can never say again that you did not know.” - William Wilberforce

As christians it is easy to forget we were slaves to sin. -John 8:34- Jesus has redeemed us from that bondage. He has given us freedom. However, as freed slaves, we should still have a heart for those still in bondage, whether it's spiritual or physical. Most times it's both. Our mission is very practical. Jesus tells us to not only share the good news but also to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free.

Luke 4:18  "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free.

Something amazing about the gospel of Jesus is that it is both for the oppressed and the oppressor; not just victims but perpetrators too. Sometimes we forget about Saul of Tarsus and how he was radically persecuting the church. God calls us to love our enemies. It is so tempting to just say, "Free the slaves, and to hell with the criminals who put them into bondage." But the gospel is so much bigger than that.
The gospel is a message of hope to everyone that is a slave to sin. The reality is that the perpetrator is a slave as well. A slave to lust, power, money and all kinds of other perversions. They are in chains of a different kind. We forget that Jesus was crucified to set sinners free from the bondage of sin. Instead of having the perspective of hate toward these people, we, as christians, ought to be praying for them. Pray for the men across the world exploiting women and children. Pray for the business owners that take advantage of their employees. We need to love them well.

4 Ways to Fight Against Slavery

Now that we have set the perspective for the oppressor. What can we practically do to fight the second largest international crime industry in the world?

I have five practical ways that we can make steps toward justice. I hope that this can help us, as the church of Christ, to move into action against this great evil in the world.

1. Pray for the victims and their perpetrators

Above all else we need to pray to the God of everything who is completely sovereign and in control. We need to pray fervently for the 27 million slaves in our world. We also need to be praying for God to work in the hearts and minds of the perpetrators as well.

2. Raise Awareness

Raising awareness may not seem that important but the more people who know this is happening, even right here in America, the more we can fight it.

3. Don't look at porn

Pornography is already extremely degrading but here is another reason not to look at it. If you are looking at porn you are actually helping sustain the horrible industry of sex trafficking.

Pornography is fuel for sex trafficking, heightening the demand for prostitution. With a higher demand for prostitution, there are more opportunities for a pimp to exploit women and children for these purposes. Every time you watch porn, even if you're not paying for it, you are creating a greater demand for pornography.

Stop and think about the women and children being abused and degraded the next time you're tempted to look at porn for your own temporary "pleasure."

4. Make a stand

Slavery today mainly harms women and children while men are primarily the abusers. It shouldn't just be women standing up and fighting for this issue. We need more christian men who are willing to make a stand against abuse, exploitation, pornography, and prostitution. We need more men who deeply care for these women and children.

Are you willing to stand up against this great evil instead of turning a blind eye?
