This is a question that has been asked in every nation and every age since the beginning of the world.

Why are we here?

This is a question that has been asked in every nation and every age since the beginning of the world. Still the question stands. Why are we here? For a Christian the answer is simply, but do I dare say vaguely summed up in this verse.

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. -Ephesians 2:10

We are the workmanship of Christ, created to do good works that were prepared in advance, to ultimately glorify God. This in and of itself is pretty straight forward but practically what does that good work look like? What is the good work that was prepared in advance for me to do? This answer in it's fullness is far more complicated. The Holy Spirit is living and active in every believer and it is through an intimate relationship with him that the truth and direction for your life is obtained. However, the Lord has given us instructions on how to live  a life of purpose and abundance.

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

- 2 Peter 1:3

If this is true and we know that it is true because all scripture is God breathed, why are we sitting around waiting to hear from the Lord w
hen there is an entire book full of instruction on how we are to live? Is it such a crazy idea to actually do what the bible tells us to do? We have accepted the lie that unless you hear God's audible voice talking directly to you some parts of the bible don't apply. "Maybe I'm just not called to do that."  We'll take for example:

Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

 - James 1:27

Currently, there are approximately 500,000 children in foster care in the United States. It’s estimated that 120,000 are eligible for adoption. With over 400,000 churches in the United States, if one person in every 3rd church would choose to take in a child, all the children would be adopted. Thats just in the US! Imagine if every christian family chose to adopt. What would the world look like?

That is a pretty staggering fact if you ask me. We are told that true Christianity is to take care of the orphan yet, out of 400,000 churches claiming to believe in true Christianity we fail to take care of the mere 120,000 children who need a home in a stable family to show them the love of Christ. What if instead of waiting on the audible voice of God to adopt a child, we instead adopt until we hear the audible voice of God telling us not to.

 Conclusion

There could be a book written on this matter but for the sake of time and the length of this article I am just going to leave you with this question. What has the Holy Spirit been putting on your heart lately that is uncomfortable? If nothing then, what parts of scripture are you avoiding because it seems too hard or uncomfortable?

We as christians have been given a foundation of how to live life and it is laid out in scripture. If you are waiting to here from God to make your next move and are not hearing anything, then maybe it is time to simply do everything scripture calls you to do until you hear the audible voice of God telling you to do something else instead. You'll find that in that life of extreme devotion to the word of Christ, the Holy Spirit will actually not seem so distant after all.
